Video Tennis: Difference between revisions

While starting mainly as a derivative of YouTube Poop, and in the early years much more embraced by the full Youtube Poop community, it increasingly came into its own much in the same way as the sister offshoot of [[YTPMV]] as time went on and the community of mainline Youtube Poop and the community of tennis have grown largely separate. A definite "jumping off point" in terms of its separation has occasionally been noted to have happened somewhere in late 2010 or early 2011, a period in which more classic, simpler styles of engaging with tennis were pushed into the background in favor of work that was growing increasingly avant-guarde and exploratory -- {{MycroProcessor}}'s "5"(2011) is identified as a major and defining work to come from this period.  Much of modern tennis operates on a completely different creative philosophy in comparison to [[Youtube Poop]], often veering into such experimental, atmospheric, avant-guarde and generally much more overstimulating territory. "Video tennis" as a term was first used by {{CorruptionSound}} to denote his matches as early as 2009.

Unlike [[YTPMV]], much of the main [[Youtube Poop]] community does not regard YTP/Video tennis with much, if any serious regard or respect regarding its contributions to the overall spectrum of work created within this collective idiom. Tennis is often ignored or devalued in comparison; seen as an inaccessible, disposable obscurity owing to its tendency to explore styles and methods of video craft that are far outside of the conventional comedy that tends to define Youtube Poop, or the conventional music/organized sound structures that define YTPMV. Common criticisms often point the to the lack of humor in tennis, as well as the visual, colorfully overstimulating material that often obscures the baseline sources that were used to eventually arrive at that result, leaving many viewers little in the way to relate to in the same way that they would normal Youtube Poops. Some have viewed common tennis styles and techniques as a "lazy" way to make videos under the pretext of viewing the subversion of media as working in tandem with an understanding and a utilization of the media's exploitable material; Tennis often ignores this in favor of different, more sub-textural angles of editing approach, in which combinations and peculiarities of a source's sound, or the energy of a specific visual moment, can often play a part. Conversely, when exploitation of material for comedic purposes is the common point of focus for a player in a tennis context, this usually becomes focused on above the match at hand, and many response opportunities to a previous round have often gotten missed or large swaths of the previous round are ignored outright as a result.  

Much of the work produced within tennis tends to push into the extremes of all areas, from maximalism to minimalism, and the contexts of the various ways edited material is interrelated. View counts for videos created in a tennis context are almost always universally low, with many taking years to eventually accumulate view counts that surpass 1,000. Tennis rounds often accumulated counts of a few thousand or more in its early years, usually depending on the following and the status of the player/creator within the community itself. The most popular tennis matches have almost always happened between popular YTPers themselves who have the following to allow their work, and sometimes the work of their opponent if this opponent is more obscure, to be seen with uncommonly high attention.  

Tennis has also become known in recent years for having a very large, much-younger base of creators usually operating on the fringes of the community, actively making large volumes of work that tend to capture and magnify the base impressions of tennis in the form of loud, amateurishly made works using a small and repetitive pool of the same shared sources that offer little to no variation of execution. The ways in which this defines the overall impression of tennis as a medium altogether tends to vary depending, but has usually served to emphasize a perceived lack of collective creativity.

Certain rounds from certain matches have been embraced as individual works, though this is seen to come at a detriment to the perception of tennis itself as something to only understand individual videos through, rather than the progression of the matches that eventually arrive at said "rounds" within the match. In many matches, the serve is usually the most popular video as it is the easiest to engage with as a work in its own right. Occasionally a round late in the match gains the most attention, usually for its maximalist, overstimulating and overly abstract qualities producing reactions of confusion or dismissal, even from those already cultured within YTP itself.

At first, there was hardly any tennis community in a well defined sense to speak of; tennis was at the very beginning considered to be a straightforward extension of the main community for YTP itself, and  would be considered an intricately connected part of YTP during the years in which the use of that branding for video remixes was at its strongest and most dedicated. Much of the tennis matches that were played following the first one was thus done so in a way that would be seen by modern standards as very disorganized; it was engaged with in the same relative loose, anarchic and "shitposty" spirit as YTP at large, being considered among the body of "contests" that included early collaborations as designated on conradslater's "Vanilla" YouChew forums. That being said, there were a handful of notable early names that became early fixtures in the world of tennis: BMATF played the second ever tennis match with Markie, and UncleChuckTH played the third ever tennis match with conradslater (the latter's second match), and both UncleChuckTH and BMATF would continue to exist in the world of tennis until the early 2010s. TangerineImpz vs. SeductiveBaz was played entirely start to finish on August 21, 2007, the day that the final round of the first tennis match was uploaded, and this was for a very long time the fastest tennis match ever played; SeductiveBaz would also be an early fixture and continued to tennis in some capacity until a full 12 years later. Second only to conradslater's early activity in tennis was that of {{MrDrunkenFox}}, who played multiple early games including with Tentor, plex14, PapaGonzales and Furnessly. This latter player, along with other such players such as InsinerateHymn, JazzDanceForChildren, TyrannosaurusReich, MelvanaInChains, dvariano, Luioigi, {{strong414bad}}, ADHDYoshi, GameCubeHero, Intenseowl, MVJ5197, 3inchhorse, ELPSteel, SushieBoy, Vorhias, sonicnerd23, and SesakaGenX would also serve to play their own individual roles in defining the nature of tennis at its earliest onsets. Tennis is considered to have reached one of its first peaks in its intersection with "Robotnik YTP" at the time - videos that focused entirely on remixing episodes of ''[[The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog]]'' and its main antagonist -  in particular the matches of [[Wikiwow vs. UncleChuckTH]](2007), the first ever match to reach ten rounds, UncleChuckTH vs. BMATF(2007), [[Stegblob vs. TyrannosaurusReich]](2007), and especially [[BMATF vs. UncleChuckTH vs. Wikiwow](2007). All of these would build a foundation for a strand of tennis that would eventually continue long separate from the main tennis community, which, although small, would localize and organize itself largely on the YouChew forums.
